Venomous Canadian Caterpillars Found in Genesee County
It's not the first time and it likely won't be the last.
It's ironic that this showed up in my Facebook feed this morning - yesterday while I was riding my bike, I came across a tiny, adorable caterpillar who was ferociously trying to inch his way across a busy street. I tried to pick him up, using my cell phone as a tray, so I could move him to safety. I didn't want to touch him, in case he's poisonous.
Turns out, he was. He was an American Dagger moth caterpillar and his little black fuzzy spikes can leave welts. And then, I saw the post above on social media.
A Swartz Creek woman and her husband found a Hickory Tussock moth caterpillar on a Japanese maple tree next to her house. Upon further inspection, she realized that they're venomous and they have been found in Genesee County in the past.
Yes, they're cute and furry, but make sure you talk to your kids before they bring them home as pets.
