State Representative Joe Graves will sponsor a summer reading program for children in the 51st House District, with winners invited to spend a day at the state Capitol.

Graves said the contest is open to children in first through fifth grades and is being conducted with the Genesee Public Library.

"Children who read are able to travel to new places and experience new ideas they may never account elsewhere," Graves said. "In addition to being enjoyable, reading keeps a child's curiosity and quest for knowledge fresh during the summer months. This contest is a fun way for children to remain engaged in learning during the summer, which will make the transitions to class in fall much easier."

Libraries participating in the program include:

  • Fenton Winegarden Library, 200 E. Caroline St., Fenton
  • Linden Library, 201 N.Main Street, Linden
  • Goodrich Library, 10237 Hegel Road, Goodrich

Children can obtain bookmarks at the libraries and keep track of all the books they read. The bookmarks will be turned in at the libraries in September, and the names of winners will be drawn at the end of the program. The winners will be Graves' guests in Lansing later in the fall.
