State motorists are paying 38.6 cents more for gas this week according to AAA Michigan. This is the fifth straight week of an increase in prices.

AAA says the unusual surge in Michigan prices are largely due to a combination of pipeline and refinery problems in the Great Lakes region. Prices are expected to begin stabilizing later this week. Currently, Michigan's average gas prices are the third highest in the nation, only behind Hawaii and Illinois.

The current statewide average in just over $3.99 per gallon, although motorists will find gas prices higher than that in many areas. The statewide average is 20 cents more than last year at this time.

Gas prices in and around Flint are averaging just under $3.95 per gallon, up 40 cents from last week, although just 12 cents from last week.

AAA surveys 2,800 Michigan gas stations daily. For more information, visit www.fuelgaugereport.com. To find the cheapest gas nationwide, go to AAA.com and click on AAA Fuel Price Finder.
