Ready or not, Election Day is almost here! With so many things squeezed onto the ballot this November, let's not lose site of one of the "smallest" races but potentially one with the most long-term impact in our community.

There is a soft spot in my heart forever labeled "Flint Community Schools". Three seats are being vacated on the Flint School Board with others up for re-election. Thus far, I have been personally disgusted with the shape of the district. The elected board will have to deal with an almost 30 million dollar deficit, a plummeting pupil population, and consistently low test scores. Drastic changes need to be made starting at the ballot box.

MLive has a voter guide which compares candidates based on occupation, age, personal beliefs, and other facts (You can compare the candidates here). It is AMAZING to me that one candidate cannot even construct ONE error-free sentence! Leon A. El-Alamin’s answers to MLive’s cookie- cutter questionnaire are full of misspelled words, run-on sentences, fragment sentences, and grammatical errors. His number two priority concerning the district is quoted as follows: “To make sure our teacher and the families of students are being empowered with the resources and tools they need working together to help produce great thinkers, entrepreneur and our generation next leaders.” OK, there are no misspelled words in THAT sentence- but holy cow!

The Flint School District is in dire need of resting her future in competent hands. We’ve all heard of resumes getting tossed into the nearest garbage receptacle when finding even one error. Employers do this to weed out the uneducated, unwilling-to-hit-spell-check-before-printing kind of people. The school board essentially works for our children, but as parents, we have the say. Join me in taking this particular race extra seriously this election season, and let’s toss this travesty of a resume and others like it into the recycle bin.
