August 26th is National Dog Day! Okay, to be fair, almost every day is "national _______ day," but who cares - we all need some joy in our lives right meow...er, now.

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Animal Welfare Advocate and Pet Lifestyle Expert, Colleen Paige. According to their website:

National Dog Day celebrates all breeds, mixed and pure and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, either from public shelters, rescues, and pure breed rescues.

National Dog Day honors family dogs and dogs that work selflessly to save lives, keep us safe, and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day - protecting our families and homes, for their law enforcement partner, for their blind companion, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and helping to locate and rescue victims of accidents and tragedy.

Want to use National Dog Day to help fur babies in need? Here are a few things that you can do:

  • adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue
  • donate blankets, food and toys to shelters and rescues
  • write your congressman and ask them to shut down puppy mills
  • walk an elderly or disabled neighbor's dog
  • give your dog a massage or a special treat

No matter how you do it, enjoy the company of your pup today! Here are some of the doggies that belong to our Cars 108 listeners.
