Michigan School Reports Possible Mumps Case

Three Rivers Community Schools in South West Michigan may have a mumps case in one of their schools. A letter was sent to parents yesterday warning them of a possible mumps case. It has not been confirmed yet, but they are working with the health department.

According to WNEM, mumps is a viral illness that can cause serious problems in children. Mumps can be spread from person to person contact including coughing, sneezing, and direct contact. Symptoms of mumps include a fever, headache, fatigue, and swelling of the glands. Those symptoms can last up to 10 days.

Mumps is preventable through a vaccine. Most children receive the MMR shot around 12 months that prevent mumps.
