A movie filmed almost entirely in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has made its debut. 'Up There,' which is said to be a romantic thriller, is being screened this week throughout the state.

The movie centers around journalist Jack Cohen, played by Daniel Weingarten who also directed the film. Cohen is sent to the UP to report on a mine closure and meets Emma, played by Zoe Kanters.

But Cohen soon learns of Emma's tragic past and winds up exploiting her life story for his own professional gain.

The idea for the film originated with Kanters, whose close friend was killed 10 years ago in the Upper Peninsula town of Iron Mountain.

Kanters, Weingarten, and co-director Michael Blaustein penned the script, which they say they hope will resonate with viewers who have suffered from loss.

Screenings of the film began last week and continue throughout the state:

  • Nov. 12-14 - The Bay Theatre, Suttons Bay, MI
  • Nov. 13-14 - The State Theater, Ann Arbor, MI
  • Nov. 14 - Tivoli Theater, Stephenson, MI
  • Nov. 17 - Maple Theater, Bloomfield Hills, MI
