William Blatty, the author of "The Exorcist," spearheaded a group that has submitted a cannon law petition asking Cardinal Donald Weurl, Archbishop of Washington, to rescue Georgetown University's Catholic identity or declare it can no longer refer to itself as a Catholic institution in its fundraising and representations to applicants.

The effort came after Georgetown invited HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to be the 2012 graduation ceremony speaker. She is a supporter of late-term abortions and requiring contraceptive coverage under Obamacare. The Catholic Church is suing the Obama Administration over new regulations that force religious institutions to pay for coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraception, and sterilization regardless of the employers’ moral or religious objections.

The 198-page Father King Society petition is signed by more than 1200 alumni, students, parents, teachers, and other laity from around the world. Submitted with the petition is a 120-page dossier summarizing decades of Georgetown scandals. Neither the specifics of the petition nor the dossier are being made public at this time.

The petition cites a 2012 Vatican decree that directed the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru to cease calling itself "Catholic" and "Pontifical" for “continuing to orient its institutional initiatives according to standards that are inconsistent with the norms and morality of the Church.” The decree maintained, however, that the Peruvian institution remained ecclesiastical property and subject to Church laws.
