Hurley Nurse, Cancer Survivor Running Virtual Crim in Flint – The Good News
Talk about an inspirational story!
Michael and Missy Skaggs are both runners, they're married to each other and they're both nurses at Hurley Medical Center.
Michael talked to ABC 12 and said that, back in 2018, he wasn't feeling so great. He was exhausted and had a lot of cramping and abdominal pain. He finally went to the doctor and, after a couple of months of tests, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The doctors gave him 18 months to live and told him that he may not make it to the point where he could have surgery to remove the tumor.
He embarked on a long journey full of chemotherapy and radiation treatments and says that his Hurley work family and his running family was there for him the entire time. In fact, at one point, his Crim training group showed up at his door with shovels, rakes, and mulch and did his spring yard cleaning for him.
He also had surgery to remove the tumor, along with his gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas.
Now, about a year-and-a-half later (which was his expected survival time), there is no evidence of cancer. Michael is quick to point out, though, that it's not necessarily considered "remission" because of the high reoccurrence rate. However, he's planning on running the virtual Crim this week.
This guy is truly an inspiration. And here I was, complaining about WALKING the 5-mile Crim! Congrats on your positive diagnosis AND your next Crim race, Michael! Thank you for being a positive force in the Flint area.
