Grand Blanc Releases Plans For Abandoned K-Mart Plaza
The K-Mart plaza in Grand Blanc has been vacant for quite a while, but it looks like a plan is finally in place to bring life to the buildings.
The plaza had been home to Farmer Jack and a K-Mart. The Farmer Jack closed their doors in 2007, followed by the K-Mart closing down seven years later in 2014. The plaza sat empty, with no real path for the future until it was bought by a developer in 2019.
Since the announcement that someone bought the buildings, there has been a nervous anticipation from residents as to what would businesses would take over the space.
If you're not familiar with Grand Blanc, this might seem a little dramatic, but residents are really concerned about new businesses opening up. The most popular choices were for a Trader Joes, or a Whole Foods but in the back of everyone's minds was the fear that another mattress store may open up.
The city released a development plan recently that answers a few of the questions. Here's what we know so far.
The developer has released plans that show how the buildings are going to be divided up into smaller stores. The pictures below are from the City of Grand Blanc Fall/Winter newsletter.
There will be a total of 11 new business spaces created by the planned renovations.
The first with up to 6 tenants facing Saginaw Street and the main, larger 87,000 square foot building split in two for 2 tenants. The outlot building will be about 7,400 square feet with up to 3 tenants
The reactions have been mixed from the community, with most of the negativity coming against the idea of another strip mall. The larger building being split into two businesses does leave the door open for another major retailer to move into the space, but everyone has accepted that it most likely won't be a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's.
I think it's great that the plans to occupy the buildings are moving forward, just please, for the love of pete . . . don't let there be another mattress store in the plaza.
