The City of Flint will hold two public events commemorating 9/11 on Thursday.

The first will be the Red Cross Ready emergency preparedness education program held at the Brennan Senior Center. It will inform attendees on ways in which they can be ready for emergencies. The three-step program will cover how to create and emergency kit, how to make an exit plan with safe routes through the community and where to turn for helpful information. Mary Zumbrunnen, City of Flint Chief Service Officer, says "remembering the events that occurred on this day 13 years ago helps up to recognize that emergencies do not often come with warning." The program begins at 10 a.m. The Brennan Senior Center is located at 1301 Pingree Avenue in Flint.

Following the preparedness education program will be a commemoration of the events of September 11, 2001 on the front lawn of Flint City Hall. Speakers include Mayor Dayne Walling, Police Chief James Tolbert, Fire Chief David Cox, Jr., Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell and others who will share perspective on how residents can become engaged and contribute to strengthening community safety. Walling says "one of the greatest lessons to take away from 9/11 is that in times of great peril it takes the whole community, not just our first responders and volunteer organizations, but all of us working together to provide aid in whatever ways we can."

A shuttle service to the ceremony at Flint City Hall is being offered for participants of the Red Cross Ready program aged 60 and older. Lunch will also be provided for those individuals. Those interested in the lunch and shuttle service can RSVP by calling Deborah Holmes at (810) 766-7238 or by emailing brennanseniorcorporation@gmail.com.
