Romeo's Detroit Animal Welfare Group took in nearly 500 parakeets last week from a man that has a serious animal hoarding problem. Well, over the weekend, another 339 more birds were brought into the shelter from the very same home.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, the hoarding owner had wanted to breed a few of the birds. But parakeets breed fast, leading to the situation getting quickly out of control.

The 836 parakeets came from a very unhealthy situation as you can imagine and have been placed with multiple groups including DAWG, Jojos Flying Friends, Birds and Beaks, and the East Michigan Bird Rescue.

Having two or three birds can be a lot of work for some people. It's really hard to imagine living with 836 of those noisy/smelly birds under one roof. The odor in that man's home must have been unbearable.

The Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) is accepting applications for the parakeets on their website and will be adding a bird specific application soon. After the birds quarantine for 30 days, they'll be up for adoption starting on January 23.

The Detroit Animal Welfare Group:

Owning a parakeet is a 6-15 year commitment and they require not only food, water and daily cage cleaning but also daily interaction, enrichment and flight time. As any pet they should be part of the family. Please know that birds are vocal and can be noisy and messy.
