For the first time in nearly four years, AAA Michigan reports that the national and statewide average gas prices have dropped below $3 per gallon. According to AAA, the last time this happened was December of 2010.

The current statewide average in Michigan is about $2.97 per gallon, right on par with the national average and down 13 cents from last week. Gas prices in and around the Flint area are almost ten cents lower however, with prices hovering around $2.87 per gallon. Prices in the Flint area are the cheapest in the state. The highest averages can be found in the Marquette area where it's $3.11 per gallon.

AAA says that if recent trends continue, gas prices may drop a little further before stabilizing. However, AAA says retail gas prices typically reach an annual low in November or December and the price of crude oil has stopped dropping steeply and that may act as a break on further price drops.

AAA surveys more than 2,800 Michigan gas stations daily. For more information, visit www.fuelgaugereport.com. To find the cheapest gas nationwide, go to AAA.com and look for AAA Fuel Price Finder.
