1911 — Cy Young of the Boston Braves makes his 906th and final appearance in a major league game, losing 13-3 to Brooklyn. (More info.)

1926 — Yankees’ slugger Babe Ruth hit three home runs in Game 4 of the World Series at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis, as New York beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-5. (More info.)

1945 — Chicago tavern owner Billy Sianis brought his pet goat into the stands for Game 4 of the World Series between the Cubs and Tigers at Wrigley Field, but he was asked to leave, allegedly casting a curse on the Cubs’ franchise, which has yet to return to the World Series. (More info.)

1955 — Trotter Scott Frost won the Kentucky Futurity at Lexington’s Red Mile, becoming harness racing’s first Triple Crown winner. (More info.)

1959 — The Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 1-0, in Game 5 of the World Series at the Los Angeles Coliseum in front of a World Series record crowd of 92,706. (More info.)

1991 — The Baltimore Orioles played their last game at Memorial Stadium, losing 7-1 to the Detroit Tigers. (More info.)

1993 — Seven-time league scoring champ Michael Jordan announced his first retirement after winning three straight NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls. (More info.)
