1925 — A then-NFL record crowd of more than 70,000 fans filled the Polo Grounds in New York, as Red Grange and the Chicago Bears beat the New York Giants, 19-7. (More info.)

1984 — Helena Sukova, 19, of Czechoslovakia beat Martina Navratilova (1-6, 6-3, 7-5) in the semifinals of the Australian Open and prevented Navratilova from winning all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single calendar year. (More info.)

1992 — San Francisco 49ers’ wide receiver Jerry Rice set a new NFL-record by catching his 101st touchdown. (More info.)

1995 — The Montreal Canadiens traded two-time, Stanley Cup-winning goalie Patrick Roy to the Colorado Avalanche for five players. (More info.)

1998 — On a play that helped encourage the future use of replay reviews by officials, Vinny Testaverde of the Jets was awarded a game-winning touchdown on a quarterback sneak even though he never crossed the goal line. New York beat the Seattle Seahawks, 32-31. (More info.)
