Consumers Energy Puts Plans for Natural Gas Power Plant in Thetford Township on Hold

Consumers Energy

Consumers Energy has put plans for a new $750 million natural gas power plant in Thetford Township on hold. The decision will also mean 30 new jobs at the plant, along with 600 construction jobs are also scrapped.

According to MLive, Consumers made the announcement on Thursday. The utility company had announced plans to construct the plant in northern Genesee County in December 2012. The plant would have produced enough power for 445,000 customers. Construction on the plant was to have begun in 2015 and the plant would have gone online in 2017. The plant was to make use of turbine technology. The turbines are similar to airplane engines and would have been fueled by natural gas to produce electricity.

Consumers officials projected the plant would have brought in $8 million in annual property taxes for the local municipalities.
