United State Representative Dale Kildee of Flint has denied charges that he molested a family member in the 1960's.

According to Mlive, Kildee called the allegations that he molested a second cousin "completely false and shameful." A relative accuses Kildee, 82, of molesting her son, Patrick, for five years in the 1960's in a Washington Times story.

In a statement released yesterday, Kildee said: "This is a concerted effort by distant relatives, two of whom have a long history of mental illness and multiple run-ins with the law, along with political adversaries to destroy my reputation by lying about something that never took place more then 50 years ago."

Kildee, who announced his retirement in July, added that family members made the accusations and tried to blackmail him to get social security benefits, which he reported to the FBI. Kildee has been a lawmaker at the state and federal levels for 47 years. His term ends in 2012.
