Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) released the following statement today after learning of the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela:

“It is with heavy hearts that Michigan, the U.S. and the entire world mourns the death of Nelson Mandela. The world today has lost an incredible and courageous leader.

“Nelson Mandela’s perseverance in the face of oppression inspired millions around the world, myself included. As a student in college in the 1970s, I studied and was moved by Nelson Mandela’s life work. As an anti-apartheid leader, he tackled racism and inequality head-on, standing at the forefront of the movement that led to a free South Africa. His mission to propagate peace is only more admirable after he himself was unjustly imprisoned for nearly three decades. Through it all, his dedication to peace and justice persevered, demonstrating to the world that hope and love can conquer all.

“While today we mourn the loss of such a revolutionary leader, I take solace in knowing that Nelson Mandela’s life work has undoubtedly made the world a more peaceful, just place."
