While police scanners will be encrypted, fire and EMS will remain the same.

Genesee County has spent approximately $6 million in upgrades to their police scanner systems in the last few years, and the new scanners have the ability to encrypt the messages that go across their airwaves.

The director of Genesee County 911 says that the "bad guys are listening" and that encrypting will allow them to keep the police and the community safer.

Some media outlets as well as enthusiasts and everyday citizens listen to the police scanners to keep track of what's happening in real time but, after today, they will no longer be able to do that.

It seems like common sense to me to have their communication encrypted, but I can also see why some people are upset. What do YOU think?
