New Movie Releases: January 2015
The holidays are winding down and we’re heading into the new year with a whole new schedule of films hitting theaters in 2015. January kicks us off with plenty of movie options to help you escape the winter blues, including anticipated releases like ‘Taken 3' and ‘Blackhat,’ as well as more action, adventure, and even a couple of family friendly releases. January 2
‘The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death’: Directed by Tom Harper. Starring Helen McCrory, Jeremy Irvine, and Phoebe Fox. 40 years after the first haunting at Eel Marsh House, a group of children evacuated from WWII London arrive, awakening the house's darkest inhabitant.
January 9
‘Taken 3': Directed by Olivier Megaton. Starring Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, and Famke Janssen. Bryan Mills, an Ex-government operative is accused of a ruthless murder he never committed or witnessed as he is tracked and pursued, Bryan Mills brings out his particular set of skills to find the true killer and clear his name.
‘Inherent Vice’ (Expands): Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, and Katherine Waterston. In 1970, drug-fueled Los Angeles detective Larry “Doc” Sportello investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend.
‘Selma’ (Expands): Directed by Ava DuVernay. Starring David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, and Tim Roth. Martin Luther King and the civil rights marches of Selma, Alabama, that changed the United States forever.
‘Predestination’ (Limited): Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig. Starring Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, and Noah Taylor. The life of a time-traveling Temporal Agent. On his final assignment, he must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.
January 16
‘Blackhat’: Directed by Michael Mann. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, and William Mapother. A man is released from prison to help American and Chinese authorities pursue a mysterious cyber criminal. The dangerous search leads them from Chicago to Hong Kong.
‘Paddington’: Directed by Paul King. Starring Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, and Julie Walters. A young English boy befriends a talking bear he finds at a London train station. A live-action feature based on the series of popular children's books by Michael Bond.
‘The Wedding Ringer’: Directed by Jeremy Garelick. Starring Josh Gad, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, and Kevin Hart. A shy young groom needs to impress his in-laws, so he turns to a best-man-for-hire to help him out.
‘American Sniper’ (Expands): Directed by Clint Eastwood. Starring Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, and Luke Grimes. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle's pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. Back home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty, however, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.
‘Still Alice’ (Expands): Directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. Starring Julianne Moore, Kate Bosworth, and Shane McRae. Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a devastating diagnosis, Alice and her family find their bonds tested.
‘Escobar: Paradise Lost’ (Limited): Directed by Andrea Di Stefano. Starring Josh Hutcherson, Benicio Del Toro, and Brady Corbet. In Colombia, a young surfer meets the woman of his dreams—and then he meets her uncle, Pablo Escobar.
‘Son of a Gun’ (Limited): Directed by Julius Avery. Starring Ewan McGregor, Brenton Thwaites, and Alicia Vikander. 19 year-old JR is locked up in prison and taken under the wing of Australia's most notorious criminal, Brendan Lynch. Lynch swiftly involves his young new companion in a prison break in exchange for the promise of a percentage of the gold Lynch and his gang are planning to steal during a heist.
‘Vice’ (Limited): Directed by Brian A. Miller. Starring Bruce Willis, Thomas Jane, and Ambyr Childers. Bruce Willis stars in this Sci-Fi thriller about ultimate resort: ‘Vice,’ where customers can play out their wildest fantasies with artificial inhabitants who look like humans.
January 23
‘Black Sea’: Directed by Kevin Macdonald. Starring Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jodie Whittaker. In order to make good with his former employers, a submarine captain takes a job with a shadowy backer to search the depths of the Black Sea for a submarine rumored to be loaded with gold.
‘The Boy Next Door’: Directed by Rob Cohen. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Kristin Chenoweth, and Ryan Guzman. A divorced woman falls in love with the young man who moves on to the street and finds he has a dark secret.
‘Mortdecai’: Directed by David Koepp. Starring Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ewan McGregor. Art dealer Charles Mortdecai searches for a stolen painting that's reportedly linked to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.
‘Strange Magic’: Directed by Gary Rydstrom. Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Elijah Kelley, and Kristin Chenoweth. A fairy tale of goblins, fairies and imps meeting for the first time and the consequent confusions and conflicts the culture clash causes.
‘The Loft’ (Limited): Directed by Erik Van Looy. Starring James Marsden, Wentworth Miller, and Matthias Schoenaerts. Five friends who share a loft for their extramarital affairs begin to question one another after the murdered body of an unknown young woman is found in the property.
‘Mommy’ (Limited): Directed by Xavier Dolan. Starring Anne Dorval, Antoine-Olivier Pilon, and Suzanne Clément. A widowed single mother, raising her violent son alone, finds new hope when a mysterious neighbor inserts herself into their household.
‘R100' (Limited): Directed by Hitoshi Matsumoto. Starring Mao Daichi, Lindsay Kay Hayward, and Hairi Katagiri. An average man who leads a relatively mundane life joins a mysterious club where membership lasts for one full year and no one is allowed to cancel their membership. The man soon finds himself overwhelmed in a strange, exciting new world of desire and pain.
‘Red Army’ (Limited): Directed by Gabe Polsky. This documentary examines the most successful sports endeavor in Soviet history: the Red Army hockey team.
‘Song One’ (Limited): Directed by Kate Barker-Froyland. Starring Anne Hathaway, Mary Steenburgen, and Johnny Flynn. After her brother is in an accident, Franny returns home only to fall in love with her brother's musical idol.
January 30
‘Black or White’: Directed by Mike Binder. Starring Kevin Costner, Octavia Spencer, and Gillian Jacobs. A grieving widower is drawn into a custody battle over his granddaughter, whom he helped raise her entire life.
‘Project Almanac’: Directed by Dean Israelite. Starring Amy Landecker, Sofia Black-D'Elia, and Virginia Gardner. A group of teens discover secret plans of a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control.
‘Coming Home’ (Limited): Directed by Yimou Zhang. Starring Li Gong, Daoming Chen, and Huiwen Zhang. Lu and Feng are a devoted couple forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a labor camp as a political prisoner during the Cultural Revolution. He finally returns home only to find that his beloved wife no longer remembers him.
‘Wild Card’ (Limited): Directed by Simon West. Starring Jason Statham, Michael Angarano, and Sofia Vergara. A recovering gambling addict finds work providing protection to his friends.
