Michigan is packed with hidden gems. We’re talking quiet little beach towns, random lakes you’ve probably never heard of, and scenic spots that are way cooler than people give us credit for. But get this, the biggest bear ranch in the entire country is also right here in Michigan. Seriously.

I’ve lived in this state my whole life and had no idea this place even existed.

Michigan’s Bear Population on the Rise

Before we get into this wild bear ranch, let's talk about Michigan’s black bear population and how it is growing.

Most of Michigan's bears live in the Upper Peninsula (makes sense, right?), but they’re starting to work their way down more and more into the northern part of the state, too. In fact, according to The Sun Times News, the bear population in the northern Lower Peninsula has increased by 55% since 2012, expanding into areas like Traverse City, Midland, and beyond. We’ve even had sightings in Genesee County over the past couple of years.

With so many bears in Michigan, it's really no surprise to find out that there's a huge ranch dedicated to more than 40 rescued American Black Bears. These bears are living the good life on 240 acres.

Oswald's Bear Ranch is located in Newberry, in the Upper Peninsula, and was founded nearly 30 years ago by Dean and Jewel Oswald.

While visiting the ranch, you can walk the property, feed the bears, and check out informative signs and displays that share fascinating facts about bears, their habitats, and the conservation efforts to protect them.

Oswald's Bear Ranch closes during the winter months but will reopen to the public Memorial Day weekend.

12 Animals You Must Report If You Hit Them in Michigan

Ever hit an animal while driving in Michigan? Well, it turns out some of them need to be reported. We'll break down the animals you have to call in if you hit them. It’s not just about doing the right thing; it’s also about avoiding any legal issues.

So, who do you call? If you hit one of these animals, you’ll want to contact the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or local law enforcement. If it’s an actual emergency, call 911; otherwise, just dial the non-emergency number. They’ll handle the situation and make sure everything's squared away. Just don’t forget to report it.
