The Board of Commissioners voted to raise the tobacco purchase age from 18 to 21 in Genesee County.

The new law was decided on Tuesday with a passing vote of 7 to 2.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette says the new raise in age to purchase cigarettes conflicts with state law.

Genesee County isn't the first to pass such a law in Michigan. Ann Arbor City Council approved the same ordinance last summer.

The new law will go into effect in 90 days.
