Students from five area high schools plan to participate in a national walk-out scheduled for April 20, the 19 year anniversary of a deadly school shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado.

High school students from Grand Blanc, Davison, Flushing, Lake Fenton, and Carman Ainsworth school districts plan to participate in the walkout which has been planned in response to the school shooting in Parkland Florida earlier this month.

Kayla Sharpe, a Junior at Grand Blanc High School, tells WJRT she's hopeful the protest will make a difference.

"Students have always been at the forefront of every, you know, political movement, whether its walkouts, you know, sit-ins, stuff like that," she said. "And so, to bring it here, it's just really interesting and I feel like so awesome to be a part of it."

Sharpe notes that students in the Grand Blanc won't be penalized for leaving school on April 20th.
