Bill Inspired by Nassar Case Causes ‘Concern’ for Catholic Church

The lobbying arm of the Catholic church is expressing 'concern' about a group of bills that includes legislation that would lengthen the statute of limitations for victims of sexual abuse.

The bills -- which have been introduced in the wake of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse case -- would let victims abused as minors file suit up until they reach the age of 48. Currently, Michigan law states that victims must file by their 19th birthday, or within three years of the date of abuse.

A Michigan Catholic Conference spokesman said today (2/27) that extending the statute of limitations is 'concerning' but declined further comment. According to WDIV, the Catholic church has paid out approximately $3 billion to settle clergy abuse cases in the United States.
