Angelina Jolie Files for Divorce From Brad Pitt
UPDATE: “This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time,” Angelina Jolie's attorney Robert Offer told Reuters.
Brad Pitt said in a statement to PEOPLE, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."
Angelina Jolie just filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, according to a TMZ exclusive — and it reportedly has everything to do with the children.
"Jolie filed legal docs Monday citing irreconcilable differences, the site reports, claiming that she is being represented by attorney Laura Wasser.
"She's asking for physical custody of the couple's 6 children. She is asking the judge to give Pitt visitation. It's significant...she does not want Brad to have joint physical custody, only joint legal custody."
TMZ goes on to report that it was Brad's parenting "methods" for their children — Shiloh, Vivienne, Zahara, Maddox, Pax and Knox— that caused the rift.
"Angelina's decision to file has to do with the way Brad was parenting the children...she was extremely upset with his methods. We're told there was no alleged 'third person'...her decision to file was solely over Brad's interaction with their children."
The couple began dating in 2004. After announcing their engagement in 2012, the couple got married in August of 2014 in Chateau Miraval, France.
According to TMZ, Jolie listed the couple's date of separation as September 15, 2016.
“We have moments where I say, ‘I’m going to be a better wife! I’m going to learn to cook,’ and he says, ‘Oh honey, know what you’re good at, know what you’re not.' He knows my limitations and where I’m a good wife and a good mom," Jolie told Today in 2014.
“I worry about them all the time," Pitt told Psychologies Magazine of his children back in 2014. "That’s the emotional bond and responsibility that sweeps over you when you have a family to look after. I care about them more than I care about myself, which I think is the real definition of love. You see past yourself and become more generous and giving, and wanting only the best for your family.”
Their romance first sparked while on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. Pitt and Aniston divorced the following year.
"It's sad, something coming to an end. It cracks you open, in a way—cracks you open to feeling. When you try to avoid the pain, it creates greater pain. I'm a human being, having a human experience in front of the world. I wish it weren't in front of the world. I try really hard to rise above it," Aniston told Vanity Fair in a 2005 interview following their split.
"It took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realize that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe. And both knowing that the reality of that was a big thing, something that was going to take a lot of serious consideration," Jolie said in the January 2007 issue of Vogue.
Pitt and Jolie were last photographed together by TMZ back in July in West Hollywood.
