Three people are dead and dozens injured as a result of a massive accident on I-75 near Detroit this morning.

Among those who died were a 7-year-old boy and his 9-year-old sister who were travelling with their parents from Windsor, Ontario. Another motorist also died in the crash. None of the victims names have been released.

The Detroit News reports that motorists in the area reported whiteout conditions at the time of the crash which caused drivers to lose control of their vehicles. Detroit firefighters on the scene described the accident as being a "mile-long."

The Department of Homeland Security, Michigan State Police, EMS and fire department were on the scene of the accident which occurred around 9:30 a.m.

I-75 was shutdown in both directions for several hours.
