1913 — Philippe Thys of Belgium won the Tour de France in Paris. Thys gained a significant advantage after Eugène Christophe broke his bicycle and had to do the repairs in the sixth stage. (More info.)

1930 — Andre Leducq of France won the Tour de France in Paris. (More info.)

1937 — Led by Don Budge, the United States’ team beat Great Britain in Davis Cup competition at Wimbledon. (More info.)

1946 — Rudy York of the Boston Red Sox hit two grand slams and drove in 10 runs in a 19-6 win over the Browns in St. Louis. (More info.)

1952 — Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia upset Paavo Nurmi of Finalnd in an Olympic record time of 2:23:03:02 hours at the Summer Olympics in Helsinki. The victory gave Zatopek a sweep of the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and the marathon. (More info.)

1985 — Steve Cram of Britain set the world record in the mile, running it in 3 minutes 46.31 seconds at Bislett Stadium in Oslo, Norway. (More info.)

1986 – Greg Lemond became the first American cyclist to win the Tour de France in Paris. (More info.)

1996 — A pipe bomb filled with nails and screws exploded inside Centennial Park in Atlanta, the site of the Summer Olympics. A 44-year-old woman from Georgia died as a result of the blast; 111 other people were injured. (More info.)

2003 — American Lance Armstrong became the fifth cyclist to win the Tour de France five times. (More info.)
