Two NBA Players’ Lose Contracts Due to Heart Conditions
Two NBA players are out of a job when they need it the most as the Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics drop players due to heart conditions.Kings forward-center Chuck Hayes was told Monday the team was voiding his $21.3 million, four-year contract because of a heart abnormality. Celtics forward Jeff Green got similar news about his one-year $9 million contract on Sunday after an aortic aneurysm was detected during his physical. He will undergo surgery putting his out of commission for the entire season.
“While we are saddened that Jeff will not be able to play this season, the most important thing is his health, and we were fortunate to have access to an amazing team of specialists to evaluate Jeff’s case,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. “The entire Celtics family supports Jeff during this difficult time in his career.”
The conditions were caught during a routine physical the league requires when players sign a new contract. If the heart problems were detected after the physical the teams would have had to honor the contract and pay Hayes and Green in full.
Though these players are out of a job and probably in serious need of the money right now – its better they found out before they get on the court than after.
In 1993, Celtics small forward Reggie Lewis suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the court at an off-season practice at Brandeis University. He was having problems in the preceding months; an autopsy determined he had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart defect that is considered the most common heart condition among athletes.
