Tom Cruise is Talking About ‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’ and All is Right With the World
Edge of Tomorrow — the best summer blockbuster of 2014 — may have underwhelmed at the domestic box office, but it’s difficult to find anyone who actually watched it who didn’t have a great time with it. So when Tom Cruise starts teasing a potential sequel that will reunite him and Emily Blunt for another round of time-traveling, alien-shooting, heavy-armor-wearing, yoga-posing awesomeness, our ears perk up. Yes please, we would like an Edge of Tomorrow 2.
Cruise has been out and about promoting Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation to everyone with internet access, but it was MTV who nabbed this story. It seems that Cruise has cooked up an idea that will allow William Cage and Rita Vrataski to return and it involves getting the whole gang back together. In fact, he’s already chatted with director Doug Liman and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (who directed Rogue Nation) about a sequel:
I pitched it to McQuarrie and Doug. We were there one night and I was like, I’ve got an idea for it...
But there’s no reason to make an Edge of Tomorrow sequel without Blunt, whose Rita is one of the best action movie heroes of the past, well, ever. It certainly sounds like she could be on board, but it also sounds like she needs a break:
It could be so much fun. Gotta get Emily. I was like Emily, please. She was like, ’give me another year, please.'
If Edge of Tomorrow 2 does happen, we’ll have the film’s international (and maybe home video) grosses to thank for it. We also imagine this concept could live or die based on the performance of Rogue Nation and the ever-fluctuating wattage of Cruise’s star power. If his next movie goes well and if everyone decides to return and if Warner Bros. decides that goodwill trumps box office receipts, maybe we’ll get Edge of Tomorrow 2 within a few years.
And we’ll be first in line, of course.
