The state of Michigan will be offering a select number of children $15,000 in prepaid tuition, thanks to a program instituted by the Michigan Education Trust.

Saving for college can be an overwhelming prospect and for parents of younger children, it may seem like higher education is something that is still 'way off in the future.' But trust me - because I speak from experience - those years can peel off quickly and before you know it, it's time to start handing over large sums of money for your kids' education.

What is the Prepaid Tuition Program?

The Michigan Education Trust is launching a prepaid trust program, giving away a total of $1.5 million to Michigan families. That means only 100 families will be granted $15,000 to be put toward higher education.

To qualify, families must have one child that five-years-old or younger.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says the program is being launched to commemorate the Michigan Education Trust's 35th year.

“We are awarding MET $15,000 prepaid tuition contracts to 100 Michiganders between 0 and 5,” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said. “That’s enough to cover two years at a community college and one heck of a head start towards a bachelor’s degree.”

Former Governor James Blanchard joined Whitmer for the announcement.

“The Michigan education trust is one of those good ideas that got developed by good and dedicated public servants into what became a great program,” Blanchard said.
