Record-Breaking and Rare October Snowstorm Batters Northeast US
The record-breaking snowstorm that swept over the Northeast this weekend has left 2.2 million homes without power, closed public schools, and resulted in eight deaths, mainly from car accidents on icy roads.
According to the National Weather Service, the western Massachusetts town of Peru saw almost three feet of snowfall, taking the brunt of the rare October storm that raged from West Virginia to Maine.
Service on several New Jersey Transit train lines into New York City remained suspended Monday morning, making daily commutes difficult, and Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said the 750,000 power outages in his state were the worst in history.
The storm also put a damper on Halloween festivities, with a number of towns in Massachusetts and New Hampshire postponing annual trick-or-treating until later in the week so downed tree limbs and power lines can be cleared, making walking conditions less perilous.
