The Sloan Museum announced that the Flint Cultural Center location would be closing on December 9th to undergo some much needed renovation.

They will stay open during the entire renovation process at the Courtland Center location, which is currently showcasing the Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibit.

The announcement of the closing came in a press release that gave very little detail on what would be happening. The release did state that no millage money would be used for the project.

Admission to the Sloan Museum on the Cultural Center campus will be free for everyone until the closing on December 9th. In the press release Todd Slisher, the executive director of the Sloan, encouraged everyone to take advantage of the free admission.

We urge everyone to take advantage of the free admission and come take a last stroll through the current Flint history galleries at Sloan Museum in the Flint Cultural Center. We are excited to renovate these galleries, which have remained stagnant for over 20 years

I have been through the Sloan more times than I can count, including hosting two kids birthday parties there.

I think they have always done a great job with transforming the space they have to accommodate new exhibits. Despite little change in the last 20 years, the museum side always seemed new after walking through whatever exhibit was being featured. I know my family and I will be anxiously awaiting details about the upcoming changes to the Sloan.

In the meantime, the Sloan Museum Courtland Center location will remain open. The Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibit will run through mid-January. Genesee County residents will be able to get free admission to the Courtland Center location starting January 17th. A new exhibit will start at the Courtland Center on January 19th called, "Rainforest Adventure."

While the Sloan is being fairly quiet about the renovation plans, they are definitely listening to any suggestions.

They have asked that community residents email if they would like to participate in focus groups that will help shape the future of the Sloan Museum going forward. If you would like to participate, just email your information to
