FDA Investigating Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Jif Peanut Butter

The FDA along with the CDC and state agencies are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg infections linked to certain Jif peanut butter products produced at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky.

Fourteen illnesses have been linked to the outbreak. Two people have been hospitalized. Illnesses have been reported in 12 states including Illinois and Ohio. So far no illnesses have been reported in Michigan.

According to the CDC,

This outbreak may not be limited to [the 12 ] states... This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.

The J. M. Smucker Co. is voluntarily recalling multiple kinds of Jif® peanut butter products.

What Products are Included in the Jif Peanut Butter Recall?

The recalled peanut butter was distributed nationwide in retail stores and other outlets.

The recalled products have lot code numbers between 1274425 – 2140425 (the last three digits are 425) and were manufactured in Lexington Kentucky.

What To Do if You Have Jif Recalled Peanut Butter Products

The FDA says peanut butter included in the recall should be thrown away immediately.

Anyone with questions or wanting to report adverse reactions can contact Jif here or call 800-828-9980 Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM ET. You can also report to the FDA here.

The FDA recommends washing and sanitizing surfaces and utensils that could have touched the peanut butter.

If you or someone in your household ate this peanut butter and is experience symptoms of Salmonellosis, you should contact your healthcare provider.

What Are The Symptoms of Salmonellosis?

According to the FDA, Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called Salmonellosis. Illness can be serious or even fatal in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Salmonellosis Symptoms:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Abdominal cramps.

More severe cases may include a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool.

To prepare yourself for a potential incident, always keep your vet's phone number handy, along with an after-hours clinic you can call in an emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also has a hotline you can call at (888) 426-4435 for advice.
