Lake Michigan & Lake Huron Now Connected Through The State’s Newest, Longest Trail
Michiganders and people vacationing from other states will have a unique opportunity to take a new 275 mile trail all the way from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron.
The route connects 18 trails through nine Michigan counties, beginning in South Haven and ending at Port Huron. Named the 'Great Lake-to-Lake Trails Route #1', it is the state's newest and longest destination for outdoors enthusiasts. It runs from the shores of Lake Michigan in South Haven toward Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and around Albion. Then the trail heads northeast past Jackson, south of Brighton, past Wixom and northeast through Oakland and Macomb counties before ending at Port Huron on the shores of Lake Huron.
According to WXYZ, the vision for this started in 2009 with an idea from the Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance.
We loved this idea of working together for a common vision of a stronger state and the fact that so many local trail and public officials share this same sense of a 'trail community' really helped to drive the opening of the trail. We applaud the work of all trail users and trail lovers that contributed to this trail! - Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance Executive Director Bob Wilson, according to a press release
