The Eta Aquariid meteor shower will peak Tuesday, May 7th over Michigan as pieces of Halley's Comet tail streak through our atmosphere.

The meteor shower comes around whenever Halley's Comet comes back into our inner solar system. The meteor shower is actually fragments of ice that have broken out of the tail of the comet.

The meteor shower actually lasts quite a while, beginning in the end of April and visible through most of May. Earthsky says that peak viewing will be this week just before dawn.

The perfect viewing time is from 3am till dawn this week, with most of the action coming in the Eastern part of the sky.

I can say from personal experience that the number one thing you can do to help increase your chances of seeing cool meteors, is to find a dark sky.

It is impossible to stay in a city and see what the meteors actually look like screaming through the sky. You can use this map to find the darkest sky near you, trust me it's worth driving a little bit to see the meteors.
