Vic Canever Chevrolet in Fenton is hosting free American Sign Language Classes taught by on-site salesman, Albert Smolinski who is half deaf. Classes are held on the first Saturday of every month, beginning in January, 2012.  Each Saturday there will be two classes offered, the first at 1 p.m. for children ages 5 to 8, and the second at 2 p.m. for children ages 9 to 13. Each class will be 30 minutes long and will teach the children basic sign language.
Children are welcome to drop in to any class, and may come as often as they would like. Parents can browse the Vic Canever Chevrolet showroom or have automotive service done on their vehicles. Parents are also welcome to sit in on the classes, and will receive a free car wash each time they bring a child to the class.
American Sign Language (ASL) is a language that accredited schools have begun accepting, to meet foreign language requirements. ASL also helps children develop their motor skills at an early age. The classes will be taught by Vic Canever's own signing salesman, Albert Smolinski.
Smolinski was born half deaf to deaf parents. Sign language is the first language he learned, but English followed soon after, and he has continued to communicate using both languages throughout his life. Smolinski understands the importance of being able to communicate not only to his parents, but also to others in the deaf community.
"I think knowing sign language gives me the opportunity to communicate with another part of our world," stated Smolinski, who is using his background and knowledge of the language to provide an added service to Vic Canever Chevrolet customers. Check out the Signing Salesman Facebook page or contact Vic Canever Chevrolet for more information about Albert Smolinski and the free ASL classes offered.
