Lansing Gas Station Lowers Gas to $2.38 For Just One Hour

The price of gas was lowered to a mid-January level for one hour at a Lansing-area gas station and cars lined up to take advantage of the deal.

Politics Drives Down the Price of Gas

Although a political activist group was behind the stunt, those who cashed in on the deal didn't care why they were able to fill up at a deeply-discounted rate - and some weren't even aware of the reason behind the temporary low price of just $2.38 per gallon.

Americans for Prosperity purports itself as a non-partisan organization, but the $2.38 price that people clamored to pay intentionally reflected Trump-era gas prices before President Joe Biden took office.

According to the group's website, Americans for Prosperity "engages in broad-based grassroots outreach to advocate for long-term solutions to the country’s biggest problems that prevent people from realizing their incredible potential — unsustainable government spending and debt, a broken immigration system, a rigged economy, and a host of other issues..."

Customers Waited in Line for Hours

Regardless of political affiliation, people like Che Swanson told WILX-TV they were happy to fill up at a deep discount. Swanson is a DoorDash driver and was first in line, showing up roughly three hours before the event began.

“I’m over-excited,” Swanson said. “You don’t understand. Gas at $5-plus a gallon is hard to make any money. This is a blessing in disguise.”

Those who were still in line after the one-hour event ended were given a voucher to get a discount on a future fillup.

The group has not advertised any future Michigan stops on its website.
