What Are the Details?

The accident occurred Friday morning (3/31) just before 10 am in Pennfield Township, northeast of Battle Creek in Calhoun County.

Sheriff's deputies in Calhoun County say a 20-year-old man from Comstock and a 22-year-old woman from Grand Rapids were headed southbound on Pine Lake Road near the intersection of Pennfield Road.

The train-crossing arms were down and the red lights were flashing. However, the driver indicated that he ignored the train signal because he saw an eastbound Canadian National train stopped on the tracks. He did not see that there was a westbound Amtrak train coming from the other direction.

The passenger car was struck by the train on the driver's side.

No Serious Injuries

Miraculously, neither passenger in the car suffered any serious injuries. Both had minor injuries but they declined ambulance transportation to the hospital. WWMT-TV reports that both passengers sought their own medical treatment for minor injuries.

None of the Amtrak train's passengers were injured in the incident.

The couple's vehicle was destroyed in the accident.

Train Delays

In an update on Amtrak's Twitter page, the company noted that Blue Water Train 365 resumed rail service at about 2:30 pm Friday, resulting in a delay that lasted four hours and 20 minutes.

The Bottom Line

The two passengers in the motor vehicle were extremely lucky to survive. Railroad crossings should always be taken seriously.
