Why is There Suddenly a Speed Limit On Mackinac Island?

If you thought Mackinac Island's serene charm and car-free streets were unique, hold on to your handlebars because there's a new plot twist that might surprise you. The main road on the island is about to get a speed limit. M-185, the state's last unregulated highway, is finally getting a speed limit.

The picturesque loop, also known as Lake Shore Drive, wraps around Mackinac Island over a scenic 8-mile stretch. Since there are no vehicles allowed on the island, except for a few emergency vehicles, there has been no need to implement a speed limit like most towns have. Now, that is all about to change.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a bill this week to limit how fast bicycles and electric-powered bicycles can make their way through town and around the island. The new speed limit will be 15 miles per hour while traveling on M-185 and 10 miles per hour within the island's business district.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the new Senate Bill 682 Monday implementing the new speed limit for bikes and electric bikes (e-bikes) on the popular tourist destination's main road. State Sen. John Damoose, R-Harbor Springs, whose district includes Mackinac Island, spearheaded the move to slow things down on the island. Apparently, e-bikes can reach a speed of 28mph, which could be dangerous during peak times for island visitors.

The new speed limit law takes effect immediately. Those who have a bit of a lead foot, or pedal, will be hit with a civil infraction and could be subject to a civil fine of up to $100 according to new outlets.

While cars have always been a no-go on this charming island, this regulation aims to keep everyone—cyclists, pedestrians, and horses—safe as they enjoy the stunning views and historic landmarks.
