Mid-Michigan Woman Only Gets One Year Jail Deal in Child Sex Abuse Case?

As a victim myself of child sexual abuse, this one really hits close to home, especially because of the outcome. A Midland County woman is facing only one year in jail after pleading no contest to five counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a relationship.

Midland County Child Sexual Abuse Case Raises Serious Questions

According to MLive, court records show that 63-year-old Gaila Bennett accepted a plea agreement Friday. As part of that deal, prosecutors agreed to dismiss 48 additional felony counts at sentencing.

What I am trying to wrap my head around is how those 48 counts were dismissed when that is twice as many as the original set of charges.

What Was Gaila Bennett Originally Charged With?

Bennett was originally charged with 24 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Prosecutors also accused Bennett of giving children she was babysitting unknown medications, making them take showers, and getting into the shower with them.

She was also accused of creating pornographic images involving the children. Those allegations are extremely disturbing, and the sheer number of charges involved makes the outcome of the plea agreement especially difficult to understand.

What Does the Plea Agreement Mean?

A no contest plea is not technically an admission of guilt, but it means Bennett is accepting the punishment outlined in the agreement.

Under the deal, Bennett will spend one year in jail, followed by five years of probation. She will also be required to remain on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry for 25 years. Bennett is scheduled to be sentenced on November 25.
