A northern Michigan man has been charged with torture and unlawful imprisonment after police say he held a woman and child against their will for several months inside his home.

Arrest and Charges

Dwayne Hidey of Grand Traverse County was arraigned in 86th District Court and charged with unlawful imprisonment, torture, assault with intent to maim, and assaulting a police officer.

The rescue unfolded last week after a relative of the 38-year-old mother contacted police, saying they feared for the family’s safety. The relative told authorities they believed the woman was in danger of domestic assault, according to MLive.

Victim Rescue and Investigation

Troopers responded to the home to rescue the victim and her child. The woman later recounted the horrific details of her months-long imprisonment.

“Interviews with the victim, a 38-year-old New Mexico woman, indicated that she and her child were being held against their will by Hidey at the Union Township home,” state police said. “Over the past few months, the woman recounted being beaten, choked, threatened, sexually assaulted, and tortured.”

UpNorthLive reports that Hidey was uncooperative with police during his arrest. He remains held at the Grand Traverse County Jail on a $1 million bond.
