167K Pounds Of Ground Beef From Michigan Packing Plant Recalled
More than 167,000 pounds of ground beef shipped nationwide from a Michigan packaging plant have been recalled due to E. Coli contamination.
The recall was issued by Wolverine Packing Company, according to a release from the USDA.
Several People Sickened Due to E. Coli Contamination
The issue was discovered after several people fell ill after consuming ground beef on November 13. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture contacted the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the contamination was traced to beef packed at the Michigan-based plant.
As of this writing, 15 people have fallen ill between November 2 and 10. The FSIS is continuing to work with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Health to determine of others have been affected by the tainted ground beef.
Details of the Ground Beef Recall
There are more than 130 different products impacted by the recall and the complete list of products and label information is available here.
According to the USDA, the fresh products have a "use by" date of November 14, 2024, and the frozen beef products were labeled with a production date of October 22, 2024.
Although the only people that have reported illness due to the contaminated beef are in Minnesota, it should be noted that the products have been shipped to restaurants nationwide. Restaurants are urged to check refrigerators and freezers for the contaminated products and consumers should be cautious when ordering items containing ground beef.
This recall comes just days after a massive organic carrot recall was issued for carrots sold at Kroger, Target, and other Michigan stores.
