Shocking Video: Michigan Student Almost Hit by SUV
School buses are one of the safest vehicles on the road. Loaded with safety features and based on their sheer size they keep millions of kids safe everyday getting to and from school. But what about those few short steps from the bus door to the side of the road? It's the shoulder and not a travel lane, so there shouldn't be an issue, right? Wrong!
Last week in Northern Michigan a student was getting dropped off from school when a white SUV passed the school bus on the shoulder. Just before the student walked off the bus the vehicle zoomed by and missed the girl by just inches. Luckily the bus passenger was not hit when exiting the school bus, but it was certainly a heart-pounding end to her bus ride.
It's obviously illegal to pass a school bus while it's red warning lights are flashing. But why would anyone pass a bus on the shoulder? Michigan State Police are now asking the public to help identify the vehicle. In a post on X they share the video and this plea to the community:
'A normal routine for a student getting off the bus could have ended in a tragedy. We need help identifying this driver who decided to pass a school bus on the right while its lights were activated on M-33 in Onaway. Do you recognize this vehicle?'
The vehicle in question is a white SUV, possibly a 2010 Ford Escape with a decal of a flame on the side. The Gaylord Police askes for anyone with information to contact them at (989) 732.2778.
Just a few days earlier a student in West Virginia was also almost hit by a passing vehicle that didn't stop for the bus.
