Post Office to Halt Mail Delivery for 24 Hours in Michigan
The US Post Office will suspend mail delivery in Michigan and close post office locations nationwide for one day, on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Some - but not all - package deliveries will be suspended that day as well.
USPS Operations on Juneteenth
Post offices will be closed, and regular mail delivery will be paused in honor of Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday four years ago. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on June 17, 2021.
The declaration made June 19 a paid day off for all federal employees.
Impact on Michigan Courts
In Michigan, Juneteenth became an official court holiday one year later. The Michigan Supreme Court made the declaration on June 1, 2022, bringing the total number of holidays observed by state court employees to 13.
Understanding Juneteenth
Juneteenth is sometimes referred to as America's Second Independence Day. The holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Specifically, it marks June 19, 1865—the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that all enslaved people were free.
That announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The name “Juneteenth” is a blend of “June” and “nineteenth.”
Private Delivery Services Status
While the U.S. Postal Service will not be delivering or picking up mail, package pickup and delivery through UPS, Amazon, and FedEx will continue as normal. UPS Store locations (like the one on Miller Road in Flint) will also remain open.
Banking Services on June 19
Most banks and credit unions generally observe the federal holiday calendar. However, financial institutions have the flexibility to set their own hours and may choose to remain open on June 19, 2025. We suggest you call ahead to determine if your financial institution will be observing the Juneteenth holiday.
