Road Trip Season: A Top 10 Deadliest Highway Was ‘Born’ in Michigan
Summer is Road Trip season across most of the country. Drivers will pack the cars and hit the road bound for vacations, family reunions, or just a summertime leisurely drive. Take note, it can be dangerous out there.
The hard fact, traffic accidents remain one of the leading causes of death in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), just in 2020, the United States had its highest fatality rate since 2007. That year it reached 1.37 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
A recent study was done and a list was compiled by The Zebra listing "The 10 Most Dangerous Roads in America". To do so The Zebra took a look at highways with the most fatal accidents in 2019 ( full data for 2020 and 2021 has not been released yet). In determining the fatality rate, they then looked at motor vehicle deaths per 100 miles for each highway across the country.
In the #4 spot was none other than a notable highway 'born' right here in Michigan...I-75. The highway begins in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and ends at the Hialeah–Miami Lakes border in suburban Miami. I-75 passes through six different states with the final stretch of I-75 in South Florida completed in 1986.
"Midwestern sections of the interstate, particularly in Michigan, are dangerous during the winter months when roads are icy or heavy with snow. It’s ideal to have a winter emergency kit in your vehicle if you live somewhere it often snows. Florida also contains several dangerous areas along the Gulf Coast including Fort Myers, Sarasota, and particularly Tampa", the study wrote.
The findings are quick to back up the ranking with 237 fatalities and 13.27 fatalities per 100 miles noted. In addition, Hillsborough County in Florida was the deadliest along the stretch for 2019.
I-75 also has 4 pretty intense intersections where it crosses with four other highways that run east to west and are on the list as well adding some extra danger.
