Michigan Voters Have Spoken: Here’s What Changes Next
The 2026 midterm elections are in the rearview mirror. And thankfully, that means no more political ads on the radio, TV, and social media. At least for a little while!
So where do things stand? While votes are still being counted in several races across the country, some major results have already been declared, including Michigan's next governor, our next U.S. Senator, and which party will control the U.S. House of Representatives.
Jocelyn Benson Elected Michigan's Next Governor
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson will be moving into the governor's office in January. The Democrat defeated Republican John James in Tuesday's general election.

Benson has served as Michigan's Secretary of State since 2019 and defeated Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in the Democratic primary back in August. She'll officially take office in January, replacing outgoing Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who was unable to seek another term. Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan's U.S. Senate Race
Michigan voters have also chosen their next U.S. Senator.
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers and will replace retiring Senator Gary Peters, who has represented Michigan in the Senate since 2015, according to WJRT.
El-Sayed defeated Congresswoman Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary. In an unusual twist, Stevens endorsed Rogers just days before the general election. El-Sayed will begin his six-year term in January.
Democrats Projected to Take Control of the U.S. House
On the national level, Democrats are projected to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives. According to NBC News, Democrats flipped several competitive congressional districts, including some that President Donald Trump carried by double digits in the 2024 presidential election.

NBC News projects Democrats will win control of the House, with its election model estimating approximately 258 Democratic seats compared to 177 Republican seats. Those numbers are projections, not final results, as individual races are still being counted.
What's Next After the 2026 Midterm Elections?
Although Election Day is behind us, election officials still have work to do. Remaining ballots must be counted, results certified, and newly elected officials will begin taking office in January.

Regardless of which candidates you supported, the results will bring some significant changes to Michigan and Washington. And at least for now, we can get back to watching television, listening to the radio, and scrolling through social media without being bombarded by political campaign ads. I'll take that as a win!
