The major funding will help make the Joan Secchia Children's Rehabilitation Hospital a reality. The hospital is a joint venture between Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation and the Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

The new facility will be built on Wealthy Street across from the Mary Free Bed Grand Rapids Campus with a pedestrian walkway connecting the hospitals.

Multiple Services Offered

The new facility will focus on bringing innovative care for young people who are experiencing life-changing injuries or illnesses. Services will include inpatient and outpatient services for children with conditions such as brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, multi-trauma, and cancer.

The facility will have 24 inpatient rooms, state-of-the-art technology, and specialized care. The total cost to build the facility is expected to be about $70 million.

The hospital is expected to serve 2,000 to 2,500 children each year.

Kent Riddle is the CEO of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation.

"We're incredibly grateful to Meijer for their generous support of our mission to restore hope and freedom to children and families," Riddle said. "This donation will uplift families, empower communities, and make a lasting impact for thousands of children for generations to come."

According to a press release from Meijer, groundbreaking for the new facility is expected to take place this year, with construction expected to be completed in 2026.
