Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township has been making headlines since the nurses strike started in September. For more than six months, negotiations between Henry Ford Health and Teamsters Local 332 have continued as more than 750 union members wait.

$10 Million Verdict Against Genesys Hospital

But before Henry Ford Health took over operations, Ascension Genesys Hospital had their own problems to deal with. This week, a jury awarded a former postgraduate resident more than $10 million after she was fired while on maternity leave.

This all happened in spring 2021 when the plaintiff was part of a program that required her to take a licensing exam. Because she was on maternity leave, she planned to take the exam when she returned to work.

Fired During Maternity Leave In Grand Blanc

Even though she was on leave, the hospital fired the OB/GYN postgraduate resident on April 16. The hospital terminated her because she didn’t meet exam requirements due to pandemic-related testing restrictions, according to ABC 12.

She passed the exam in June 2021 but was not reinstated.

Exam Dispute Leads To Lawsuit

The Morgan and Morgan law firm represented the former resident and filed a lawsuit on her behalf, claiming Ascension Genesys Hospital violated her rights under Michigan law. Founder John Morgan and his team of attorneys argued her future earnings and well-being were significantly impacted.

After a two-and-a-half-week trial, a jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff, awarding her more than $10 million.

Five years after it all happened, this dispute has come to an end. Now, attention turns back to the ongoing strike at the hospital.
