The Michigan Department of Transportation is getting an early jump on the 2026 construction season in Genesee County, and drivers could start seeing orange barrels in just a few weeks.

Major I-69 Bridge Project Starting in Genesee County

The first major project is scheduled to begin Monday, March 30, along I-69. MLive reports that MDOT is investing about $33.5 million to repair and improve 15 bridges between I-75 and Morrish Road.

The work will include deck repairs, steel improvements, guardrail upgrades, and other structural fixes designed to extend the life of the bridges.

What Drivers Should Expect on I-69

To make the work possible, traffic will shift in the construction zone. Eastbound I-69 traffic will be moved onto the westbound side of the freeway between Morrish Road and Bristol Road using a crossover. The left lane of westbound I-69 will temporarily carry eastbound traffic through the project area.

Drivers should also expect the eastbound I-69 ramps at Miller Road to close during the first phase of construction.

Bridge work will happen in two phases. Crews will focus on bridges on the eastbound side of I-69 from March through July. Work will then shift to the westbound bridges from August through November.

The I-69 bridge project is just one of several MDOT construction projects planned in Genesee County this year. Additional work includes freeway resurfacing on I-75, road improvements on M-54 and M-57, upgrades at the US-23 Fenton rest area, ramp resurfacing near Owen Road, and ongoing planning tied to the long-term I-475 reconstruction project.
