Detroit Tigers Could be Scrambling to Find a New TV Home
The future of Detroit Tigers' TV broadcasts could be hanging in the balance as the owner of the Bally Sports Network might be getting out of the MLB game.
Diamond Sports Group, the owner of Bally Sports Detroit and several other regional sports networks, told a US Bankruptcy Court on Wednesday (10/2) that it plans to continue broadcasting only one Major League Baseball team next year. At this point, Diamond plans to drop all MLB contracts except the Atlanta Braves.
The Future of the Detroit Tigers on TV
The Detroit Tigers, as well as several other teams that had 2025 contracts with Diamond, will be left to negotiate another contract with the broadcaster or find a new TV home, according to Crain's Detroit Business.
Four other teams had contracts with Diamond that are expiring at the end of the 2024 season.
While streaming via MLB TV may be an option for some Detroit Tigers fans, blackout rules will prevent users from streaming many home games.
Diamond Sports Group Faces Financial Woes
Diamond Sports Group has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the southern district of Texas since filing for bankruptcy protection in March 2023.
James Bromley is an attorney for the MLB and tells ABC that the league was "blindsided" by the move.
"We have no information about what is being done," Bromley said at the court hearing, according to The Athletic. "We've had no opportunity to review, and now we're in front of the court and being asked to make our comments."
Comcast Customers in Michigan lost access to Detroit Tigers games in 2024 but reached a deal with Bally Sports Network in July.
